De-Ringing The Ring Road
Following on from their Public realm Strategy for Ashford Town Centre, which established a vision for a unique and distinctive public realm, Whitelaw Turkington were commissioned to deliver the next stage.
This involved the detailed design and implementation of an innovative streetscape improvements scheme covering two-thirds of the existing ring road.
Integrating art, environment and engineering
At the heart of the approach is the integration of art, environment and engineering. Three artists were engaged and an integrated design team formed. The scheme, completed in November 2008, considered a number of key elements:
