The Guildford Civic Centre was designed to replace the previous 1960s Civic building.
Guildford Borough Council believed the previous building was out-dated and no longer able to meet the standards or demands of a national entertainment venue. Grontmij, with architects Austin Smith Lord, designed a new state-of-the-art, multi-purpose performance venue. The centre exceeds 20% of renewable energy usage by integrating a biomass boiler to heat and natural ventilation to much of the general spaces. Other methods put to use include a transparent façade, and the use of rainwater harvesting to meet sanitary water needs.
