By the late 1980s the Sainsbury collection had outgrown its accommodation and Foster + Partners was asked to design an extension.
The new wing extends the building at basement level, exploiting the natural contours of the site and emerges as a curved glass frontage overlooking a man-made lake. Grontmij helped to deliver this multi-purpose display and conference space with a flexible servicing concept integrating fully with the existing building and landscape. Grontmij delivered close control air conditioning, sophisticated lighting and security systems as part of the final design.
