The Howard Hotel had suffered from lack of investment and the new owners were resolved to undertake a total refurbishment and extension of the building to increase its value.

Fundamental to the successful proposal was the addition of three storeys to the building and the reorganization of the services plant areas both to free up revenue earning space and soften the roofline of the building.

The parallel tasks of maintaining hotel operation and engineering services replacement were at the very heart of the commission and this could only be achieved by a truly integrated team approach involving the designers, client, contractors and specialist suppliers. This enabled Grontmij to create a buffer zone between guests and the construction work ensuring the continuity of service for guests and staff.
