Passive design allows for minimal active services

The design challenges the heaviness of traditional educational buildings by using a flexible and open structure.

Developed in response to the site and to a low-energy brief for the Mediterranean climate, Grontmij’s linear plan was designed to keep active building services to a minimum. Fresh air is drawn through the central street and the double-skinned roof (a light metal shield protecting the concrete structure from the sun) also facilitates a cooling flow of air. This technique can be found in ancient Arabic architecture. The roof also extends to provide much needed shading and aids the control of glare to allow optimum use of natural daylight.

The exposed concrete frame acts as a heat sink and moderates the rate of temperature fluctuation within the building. Thus, the heating, cooling and ventilation of the building are influenced directly by the form and construction.
