Maximum occupant comfort with minimal energy use
The Tower
The Tower, St George Wharf, London
The Tower has been designed to be an environmentally effective building requiring as little heating, cooling and lighting energy as possible.
The concept incorporates a number of features that had never been brought together at this scale. The façade is triple-glazed, minimising the external temperature’s impact while allowing maximum natural light. Each apartment has a winter garden which acts as a thermal buffer, reducing the need for air conditioning. Mixed-mode environmental controls encourage the use of natural air ventilation.
Much of the reduced energy requirements are met through wind and water sources including a heat pump linked to an aquifer (underground water course) and wind turbines. As a result, the building will require only one-third the gas or electricity that an equivalent code compliant building would need.
