Substantiation and validation
In 2007, Grontmij was involved in the substantiation and validation of the mechanical handling plant associated with the external lifting of Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) using a mobile crane outside the Materials Handling Centre (MHC).
Interim passive storage
The MHC was built and commissioned during the late 1990’s and is used for interim passive storage of radioactive ILW. It was the receipt and storage of the decommissioning waste that was of particular interest to Grontmij in the validation process.
Supporting NII guidelines
One of the main challenges was the substantiation of a mobile crane in the handling of nuclear material. Specific NII guidelines were applied in this case as well as appropriate modern standards and legislation in support of continued operations.
