Decommissioning nuclear plant using engineered safeguards
These safeguards can involve passive and/or active systems in order to meet the required functional safety performance. Electrical, Electronic and Programmable Electronic Systems (E/E/PES) can form an integral part of these safeguards.
Assessing quality
UKAEA's requirement was to assess the operational performance of differing types of systems and provide an indication as to the current status/quality of installed E/E/PES in order to provide an estimated cost for any potential future work.
Full and detailed service offering
The approach taken was to assess a sample set of equipment each with differing operational requirements and safety performance. Assessments were carried out in line with BS IEC 61508 and the results published to the client by way of a suite of reports for each piece of equipment. The information was used to compile budget estimates to carry out a program of assessments for all equipment of a safety critical nature that included E/E/PES across the UKAEA southern division sites of Winfrith, Harwell and Windscale.
