Grontmij has provided services to the Defence Estate's Construction Support Team-Environmental Management Group under contract reference DE11/4470 (Specialist Term Commission for Environmental Engineering for MOD Wide) since 2001. FATS/3 is now replacing DE11/4470.

The Defence Estate is one of the UK’s largest landholdings, and includes a diverse range of land properties and facilities at all stages of the procurement, development or resale cycle.

Grontmij provides a complete package of environmental and sustainability services to the MOD through our Term contract. Requirements range from desk studies, intrusive investigation and remediation of contamination on both operational and decommissioned sites, advising on and managing environmental liability issues for sale, transfer or development of sites, Environmental Audit, undertaking Environmental Impact Assessments, providing Environmental Management Systems support and developing sustainability management processes to accord with Government commitments. We work on major individual sites, overseas facilities, at project policy level or on operational technical level issues.  We have completed over 200 projects for Defence Estates to date with a total value of approximately £7m. Several remediation projects have been undertaken to decontaminate historical pollution to improve local environmental impact and manage environmental liability.

We have expertise in working on very large and complex facilities, developing methodologies for prioritising key environmental issues at large numbers of establishments and on working with MOD specific contamination such as radiochemicals, explosive ordnance or chemical agents. We have undertaken a range of projects where environmental issues needed to be addressed to allow land sales to proceed with optimum value or transfer of liability, new developments to proceed with the benefit of Environmental Impact Assessments, for project sustainability issues to be identified or environmental problems to be identified, rectified and controlled.

Grontmij has successfully completed commissions on Army, Navy and RAF facilities from the Shetland Isles to Cornwall in the mainland UK, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar. Management options, targeted remediation and any further investigations which may be required are tailored to address the key environmental liabilities identified at the site.
