River Wensum Impact of Abstraction
Protecting SACs
The River Wensum, situated in North Norfolk is both a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as it supports an Annex 1 habitat, known as a watercourse of plain to montane levels with the Ranunculion fluitantis and Callitricho-Batrachion vegetation.
Monitoring and protecting
Part of the investigations on the Wensum comprised undertaking detailed botanical and River Habitat Surveys. The ecological survey for Anglian Water Services and Environment Agency provided a baseline of the distributions of individual species along with the habitat characteristics of the stretches of the river supporting the Annex 1 communities. The work also provides a baseline from which any future changes to the ecology of the river can be measured.
