Incineration - Metal Seperation Plant

Incineration for States of Jersey

Incineration for States of Jersey

From feasibility through to construction

Grontmij was commissioned by the States of Jersey Public Services Department as consultant engineer to establish feasibility and proceed through to construction of a metal separation plant.

The Public Services Department, which owns and operates waste handling facilities for the States of Jersey, identified the need for process improvements at the municipal solid waste incinerator. Their aim was to separate and recover metals from grate ash produced from processing approximately 35 tonnes of waste per hour.

Creating standards for success

Grontmij was appointed as consultant engineer for the project and undertook initial feasibility and environmental impact assessments. The completed project delivered a plant capable of removing metal from the grate ash adequately and efficiently and allows the final ash quality to meet the regulatory standards for landfill sites.

An effective partnership approach to the project with both the employer and the contractor was an essential element of the design’s ultimate success.
