Eveline Lowe Primary School
Grontmij formed part of the winning team for a design competition for this listed 1960’s school.
Landscape components create a sequence of low, medium and high activity spaces of varying scales related to the ages of the children in the adjacent buildings, providing opportunities for creative activity, outdoor learning and social interaction in addition to active physical play. An undercroft outdoor classroom is enlivened by ground plane modelling, built-in learning tables, light and colour.
The play areas are surrounded by the ‘garden wall’ which gives new frontage to the street and supports climbing plants. The ‘garden path’ in permeable brick links the outdoor rooms and culminates in the ‘Crater’, a large active space which makes reference to the bombing of the site in WW2.
