Saïd Business School, Oxford University
This award winning new Oxford college is located on the site of the former Cistercian Rewley Abbey. It is adjacent to Oxford Railway Station and forms a new gateway to the city.
The architecture creates a frontage to two new public spaces and establishes a sequence of spaces which are developed as cloisters, quadrangle, courtyards and garden. Interpretation and representation of the Rewley Abbey plan informed the design.
Grontmij was responsible for the design and delivery of the external spaces within the college and the new spaces in front of the railway station and Park End Square. This also involved negotiations with Railtrack, English Heritage and the Oxford Archaeological Unit. Grontmij is now involved in the planned extension of the school which will enclose the western edge of the garden.
