Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)

Grontmij collaborated closely with CAMHS staff to understand safety and supervision issues and develop a healing environment with a diversity of spaces allowing different degrees of independent use. Adolescent day areas open onto a courtyard, designed as an attractive social space bringing light and greenery to the heart of the building.

The site - small and heavily-wooded - imposed programming, ecological and technical challenges and demanded careful design to maximise available light while retaining strategically placed vegetation for privacy.

An outdoor terrace extends the dining room and leads to the adolescent garden, which is informal, keeping with its woodland setting. The small children have their own play area to let off steam. The retained woodland will be used occasionally as a recreational or educational resource.
