Ghat is one of a number of destinations within a new tourism masterplan which has been developed by the Dutch firm of architects, OMA. The masterplan articulates a vision to develop Libya as an international tourist destination.

The project is uniquely located within an historic but derelict medina. Significant areas of the medina will be re-built and re-furbished, respecting and retaining the existing structure of built form and spaces, to provide bedrooms, private suites, spa facilities, restaurants and a visitor centre. A new public square is also proposed within the confines of the existing town walls as a performance, play and market space.
