Gillett Square

Gillett Square, London

Gillett Square was the first of former Mayor Ken Livingstone’s 100 new spaces for London and a key component in the regeneration of Dalston centre.

The new square formed the focus of redevelopment planned to provide new apartments, studios, a cultural centre and cafe.

Grontmij worked closely with the architect and client to create a vibrant new space designed to facilitate a range of arts events, performance and social activity. The design takes as its starting point the analogy of theatre with its constituent parts of stage, auditorium and foyer. In doing so it responds to the diverse functions of public space, in encouraging interaction and entertainment as well as creating a refuge for contemplation and chance encounter.
