St Georges Square

St Georges Square, Huddersfield

This new civic square, which was completed almost 2 years ago, was Grontmij’s winning design in a limited competition.

The design involves the rerouting of Railway Street to create a large pedestrian area. Grontmij looked to the strong architectural heritage of the area to create a scheme inspired by history but contemporary in detail and style.

The design for the square accommodates outdoor events and easy movement through the space for pedestrians, taxis and buses. Huddersfield railway station is enhanced by a fountain that changes at different times of the day. The existing statue of Harold Wilson was re-located to give it pride of place.

The scheme has won the 2010 RIBA White Rose Landscape Award.
