13 May 2011 | Grontmij commences work on two exciting projects in North West

The landscape architect team at Grontmij has commenced work on two exciting projects in the North West.

On site works have recently started at Salford Greengate, a large-scale public realm project creating a heart to a new urban quarter and part of a £450million regeneration scheme within Salford.

Trafford’s Town Hall is another recent win for the landscape architects. The proposals will create a public realm for local people and improve access for the community while preserving the historical and architectural integrity of the site.

Working alongside Shepherd Alinged, Grontmij and the design team will revitalise the listed 1930s building, near the Old Trafford grounds, and the surrounding grounds including the sunken gardens.

Danny Crump, senior associate of the landscape architect team within Grontmij, comments: “Alongside the large-scale Salford Greengate project there have been a number of exciting landscape architecture schemes happening across the North West which are undoubtedly helping to deliver regeneration and renewal to the region”

John Merry CBE, leader of Salford City Council, said: “The redevelopment of this site will really unlock its potential. Over the past ten years Salford has been transformed as a result of significant investment.

“Even though we are now facing tough economic times, it is essential we continue to harness the momentum that has built up in Salford to ensure the city and the people living here, continue to thrive.”

Over the last two years economic and commercial opportunities have improved throughout the North West region and many local authorities, including Manchester City Council, have cited urban renewal as a key element within their 2011 budgets.

Danny Crump continues: “By designing a public space that reflects the needs and desires of a local community we can encourage local people to interact with the environment and also create an exciting destination for visitors”

“Our team worked closely with the Salford Greengate stakeholders to manage the complex consultation dynamics of the proposed design. The approach was highly collaborative between Grontmij, Salford City Council and the local interested parties which helped to resolve any social issues and encourage pride in the Greengate public realm.

“The Grontmij team is passionate about regeneration in the North West. We pride ourselves on our client relationships and strive to achieve the best solution for the client, project, place and local community.”
