Grontmij will play a key role as independent assessors for a newly accredited carbon management scheme.
The Carbon Masters Standard (CMS) has been formally approved by the Environment Agency as a Carbon Trust equivalent standard for the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme. The CMS is a carbon emission reduction and certification programme that aims to encourage, reward and recognise best in class carbon management practices through the measurement, management and reduction of carbon emissions produced by businesses and public sector organisations.
Emissions reduction is a central part of the recently enacted UK Climate Change legislation. It not only reduces environmental pollution, but under the right management it can also result in significant cost savings through innovative and efficient energy use.
The CMS has been developed by Carbon Masters, a carbon management consultancy based at the University of Edinburgh with the help of climate change scientists and business leaders. Unlike equivalent carbon emission reduction schemes, it has been developed not only based on UK emission reduction targets, but also Scottish Climate Change legislation, which demands a higher rate of emission reductions.
Grontmij will be working closely with Carbon Masters over the next few weeks, developing our consultants to become fully CMS accredited, in order for them to conduct audits and field assessments on behalf of clients and submit these assessments to Carbon Masters for certification.
The scheme will provide Grontmij with the opportunity to identify areas for improvements and efficiencies, thus combining building services and environmental management services into a package not previously offered by Grontmij in the UK.
As well as developing Grontmij’s capabilities to deliver carbon footprinting and carbon management services, the scheme positions Grontmij at the forefront of Practical Carbon Management: a growth industry with a promising future.
