Grontmij was awarded three accolades for two of their projects at the ICE East of England Merit Awards, which recognise prestigious engineering projects and aim to raise awareness of the valuable contributions that civil engineering provides to society.
Grontmij picked up Team Achievement for the Southend-on-Sea City Beach scheme, a seafront regeneration project to enhance the visitor experience along the promenade, delivering key improvement features such as the creation of greater space for pedestrians, new planting and iconic high mast lighting to enhance the seafront illuminations and improve the overall environment.
Grontmij’s landscape architects picked up two further ICE awards, Highly Commended for both Physical Achievement and Team Achievement, in recognition for their involvement in the West Cambridge Infrastructure Phase 3 project for the University of Cambridge. The award-winning scheme comprised an integrated landscape infrastructure project, incorporating a dynamic new arrival square, terraced gardens, bio-diverse lake and new pedestrian and cycling routes, enhancing the overall movement network to the site.
Further award success followed at the RIBA Awards, as the Royal Veterinary College Student Village project was amongst the winners. Working alongside London-based architects Hawkins\Brown, Grontmij successfully developed an external environment to incorporate the spirit of education, interaction and the promotion of places for spontaneous meetings. Grontmij also boosted the project’s sustainability credentials through the creation of a Sustainable Urban Drainage scheme to allow water to be discharged into a swale adjacent to the central meadow, significantly increasing the site’s biodiversity.
Adrian Judd, technical director said: “We are delighted to be part of the winning teams for these highly recognised awards. These projects clearly exemplify our value beyond engineering approach, as we worked to create forward-thinking and inspiring projects that improve places for people and nature.
Central to the successful delivery of these schemes was our collaborative approach with partners and working as integrated design teams”.
