Grontmij will provide consultancy services and technical advice for the site at Moray Firth, Scotland, interpreting geotechnical, geophysical and metocean data. The project aims to help identify the most suitable offshore wind turbine and substation foundations, incorporating the skills of Grontmij’s energy specialists across the group.
This process will be undertaken in close collaboration with a number of consultants and MORL to ensure cost effectiveness, technical complexity, fabrication and subsequent erection costs are all considered when identifying the solution.
The wind development zone is located on the Smith Bank in the Moray Firth and covers an area of 522 km2. It is located 22 km from the coast, has water depths between 30 and 60 metres and could provide up to 1500M generating capacity.
Chris Paddey, strategic business director for Grontmij, said: “This project is the realisation of our combined offshore wind strategy under Grontmij’s international Water & Energy business line. It proves a close working relationship across countries is essential to deliver the best possible outcome for our customers.
“The work at Moray Firth will enable Grontmij to develop further business in what is the largest offshore wind market in the world. Our specialist teams will work in partnership with MORL to find the most appropriate solution for the offshore wind farm foundations.”
Dan Finch, project director, MORL, said: “The strategic appointment of Grontmij will help us to develop plans for the area and enable us to harness the natural power of wind in the North Sea, to deliver Moray Firth wind generation long into the future.”
Grontmij is a leading multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy operating across environment, water, transportation, energy and sustainable planning and design.
