26 Mar 2012 | Colleagues from Grontmij chosen to carry the Olympic Flame

Two colleagues from engineering consultancy Grontmij will be given their chance to set the world on fire after being selected to carry the Olympic Flame.

Andy King, director of energy and Barry Hughes systems support manager from Grontmij are amongst the thousands of inspirational people who have been nominated by members of the public and selected by the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG), to take part in the Olympic Torch Relay.

Carrying the torch in his home city of Liverpool, Andy was nominated by his brother for being a true inspiration and in recognition for his fundraising efforts for Cancer Research UK following the loss of his wife to lung cancer. He has since then gone on to take part in two Great North Runs and the New York marathon, raising tens of thousands of pounds for the charity and winning the support and admiration of his local community along the way.

Andy says: “I feel humbled to have been selected as an Olympic Torchbearer. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m grateful to my brother for even considering me for such an event!”

Barry Hughes was also nominated for his fundraising efforts, having founded the charitable organisation, Trek To The Sky in 2009, which has seen him take up numerous gruelling challenges, most recently summiting Mount Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside of the Himalayas which stands at 23,841ft. Barry has raised over £30,000 for local charities in Yorkshire including St Gemma’s hospice and the West Yorkshire Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre as well as Macmillan Cancer Support.

Barry says: “It is fantastic to be recognised for my efforts and take part in this iconic event. It’s also a great opportunity to raise awareness of the Trek To The Sky organisation and to carry the Olympic Torch in Sheffield, in the county where much of our fundraising efforts have benefitted local charities”.

As Torchbearers, Andy and Barry will carry the Olympic Flame for 300 metres as part of its 8000 mile journey across the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremony in July.
