8 Sep 2008 | Success at the Brownfield Briefing awards

Grontmij celebrated success again at the fourth annual Brownfield Briefing Remediation Innovation Awards.
A small remediation project at West Street, Yarm was submitted as a joint entry with the Environment Agency for the category of ‘Best Communications / Stakeholder Engagement’.

The winning entry was shortlisted alongside such prodigious subjects such as the rejuvenation of an 80 hectare former landfill site in Belfast, the regeneration of the former Corus steelworks at Ebbw Vale and the Olympic Park (entered by The Olympic Delivery Authority).

Communicating with the community

The project involved the remediation of land around existing occupied residential properties. The area had been determined as Contaminated Land under Part IIA by Stockton Borough Council.  In order to ensure the project was a success it was identified early on that the close involvement of the residents affected by the determination, and also those in close proximity to the site, was required.  Other stakeholders involved included Stockton Borough Council, Network Rail, the Health Protection Agency and National Grid.

'A valuable checklist'

On announcing the winning entry judge John Campbell (member of CL:AIRE Technology and Research Group) was quoted as saying the project was “A valuable checklist of how to engage with people caught up in a land contamination problem”.

'A great project, executed brilliantly'

Land Regeneration Director Mike Wilyman said ‘This was a great project that was executed brilliantly and this is reflected in the prestigious projects it has managed to successfully compete with. This is the second time in two years we have won an award at this event, and this certainly puts the pressure on all our contaminated land team for future success and a possible hat-trick next year!’

Grontmij was also appointed the role of CDM co-ordinator for the remediation scheme, and throughout the course of the project additional Grontmij expertise such as geotechnics and ecology were involved.
