Grontmij has begun work on the year long remediation project providing remediation design, site supervision, contract and planning support and validation services for the site.
Working in close consultation
Since being awarded the initial contract in 2008 and subsequently securing a place on the framework to provide geotechnical and testing services to Glasgow City Council, the Grontmij Environment team has already successfully implemented two phases of a detailed ground investigation and has undertaken human health and environmental risk assessment works to characterise the site. These works have formed the basis of the remediation strategy, which has been developed in close consultation with Glasgow City Council and the regulators, while meeting tight timescales demanded by the project.
Providing a sustainable approach to regeneration
Working alongside VHE Construction Plc, the project has now started on site. The remedial treatment approach will focus on a combination of on-site soil washing and bioremediation, while also managing invasive species, addressing the requirement for cover materials and dealing with asbestos contaminated soils. The use of on-site treatment technologies and recycling of materials will allow a sustainable approach to the regeneration of the site, and support the Council’s policy of developing a ‘low carbon’ Games.
The remediation project team has included support from across Grontmij’s Remediation, Land Quality, Ecology, Geotechnical, Hydrogeology and Waste specialisms within the UK.
"A real achievement"
Iain Hall, project manager at Grontmij, said: “Winning this commission is a real achievement and we look forward to working closely with Glasgow City Council to provide a site suitable for use as the Athletes’ Village, and subsequent development for the Games legacy. Our site investigation and risk assessment specialists have already delivered a thorough assessment of the site, and we are now progressing with the Initial Remedial Works for the site. We look forward to our continued working with the Council towards developing the site, particularly in line with targets to produce a ‘low carbon’ 2014 Commonwealth Games.”
"Pleased to be working with Grontmij"
Councillor Archie Graham, Executive Member for Commonwealth Games delivery at Glasgow City Council, said: “The 2014 Commonwealth Games will be a fantastic event for Glasgow and Scotland. At these vital early stages of the Athletes’ Village project we’re pleased to be working with Grontmij, who can provide a range of specialist skills and knowledge to prepare the site.”
