United Kingdom and Ireland
As the international Grontmij group announces strong results, a number of new assignments see Grontmij UK & Ireland continue its recent success:
• M80 Stepps to Haggs and N2 Clontibret to Northern Ireland Border strategic road schemes
• Extension of Q&SIII Framework for Scottish Water
• Commonwealth Games Athlete’s Village in Glasgow - Phase II site investigation and assessment works
Lawrence Hughes, managing director for UK & Ireland comments:
“The Grontmij group as a whole is one of the strongest financially. Our continued success in 2009 is testament to the quality of service we provide to our range of UK and Irish clients.
“The variety and depth of our services portfolio separates us from the competition and enables us to deliver value across a broad spectrum of project requirements.
“Grontmij UK’s plan is to become a top ten consultancy, and the current economic climate is not going to affect this plan.”
Strong position
Despite the tough economic conditions within the UK and Ireland, Grontmij is in a robust financial position due to several key factors. These include an extended network of multi disciplinary operations throughout Europe, three strategic acquisitions and the consultancy’s healthy multi sector project order book.
Spearheading Grontmij’s continued success in the UK is its strong position within the Water sector. The consultancy has extended its framework with Scottish Water and is in the latter stages of negotiations with Anglian Water to be reappointed as a partner within the @one Alliance for AMP5.
As well as the success in the water sector, Grontmij continues to play a leading role in the UK and Irish Transportation markets, having recently been awarded two significant strategic roads contracts.
In light of these developments, Grontmij UK and Ireland has posted strong results for 2008:

Current and recent projects
Scottish Water - Extension of Q&SIII Framework - Grontmij has been reappointed on the five Lots it is currently working on: project delivery support services, catchment management planning, planning and environmental consultancy services, procurement and programme management and asset information gathering and analysis.
M80 - Grontmij is drawing on its extensive highways experience to deliver the detailed design for the upgrade of the A80 in Glasgow to motorway standard. The project will see ten kilometres of online widening and eight kilometres of offline new motorway between Stepps and Haggs.
The project, which has a construction value of approximately £260 million, will complete the strategic road network between the M73, the M80 and M876. This includes the Mollinsburn Interchange upgrade with the M73, which is a well-known bottleneck for commuter traffic into Glasgow. The upgrade will ease congestion in the area, ensuring smoother flow and quality road surface for the high volume of traffic.
Commonwealth Games 2014 – Grontmij has been appointed by Glasgow City Council on a geotechnical and testing framework to support the city in its hosting of the Commonwealth Games in 2014, the largest sporting event outside of London in coming years.
Grontmij is supporting the initial development of the athletes’ village for the 2014 Commonwealth games in Glasgow and has completed the first phase of ground investigation works to gain a detailed understanding of the redevelopment issues associated with the site.
Grontmij will also be responsible for the design and implementation of a remediation strategy to address issues such as contaminated land, waste, geotechnical (including mine workings) and ecology.
This commission will see Grontmij working with Glasgow City Council in the provision of a suitable development platform for the 34-hectare athletes’ village site.
De-ringing Ashford’s Ring Road - Grontmij | Whitelaw Turkington has been supporting Kent County Council by redesigning the public realm in parts of central Ashford with the objective of revitalising the town to pave the way for future growth.
The pioneering project has won already won two awards; the Landscape Institute Award for the scheme’s innovation and design together with Sustain Magazine’s public realm award.
Taking account of environmental considerations, Grontmij | Whitelaw Turkington designed an innovative, integrated rainwater management system that collects, cleanses, stores and recycles rainwater run-off. This feature should set new standards and act as a precedent for water conservation and management for future development in Ashford.
Oxford Brookes University, Gypsy Lane Campus – Grontmij│Roger Preston and Partners, is currently undertaking a major redevelopment of the Gypsy Lane campus of Oxford Brookes University. The project includes a new student centre building, remodelling of the Abercrombie building and a new lecture theatre complex.
Extensive modelling of the buildings has been undertaken to optimise comfort and energy uses. These include cladding and re-cladding options, enhanced stack effect ventilation using solar chimneys, exposed thermal mass and night purging and building price coding.
