24 Mar 2011 | Hat-trick of awards for Grontmij

The Civic Trust Awards scheme was established in 1959 to reward outstanding architecture, planning and design in the built environment and to highlight projects that have made a positive contribution to the local communities they serve.

Stonebridge Hillside Hub
The Landscape Architecture team worked on The Stonebridge Hillside Hub, which was presented with a special award for Community Impact and Engagement.

Alongside a range of partners on the scheme, the judges commended the physical regeneration in this part of the borough, as well as the development’s positive outreach into the community to provide a hub of health, education and leisure services within a distinctive building.

Devonshire Square
Combining efforts and skills from Building Services and Landscape Architecture, Devonshire Square is a great example of Grontmij bringing together expertise from across the business, with the project also receiving a commendation at the awards.

The Devonshire Square project involved a 'floating' courtyard roof and the regeneration of the ground floor areas of the building which was originally built in 1793 as warehouses for the East India Company.

Grontmij was appointed to the scheme as landscape designer and building services engineer. The project has transformed the space into an attractive and desirable urban environment, making a valuable contribution to the enjoyment, comfort and pleasure of its users. If you are looking for a haven in the city a stones through from Liverpool Street, then I suggest you take a look.

The Wave
The Grontmij team in Denmark has also won an award for The Wave project, for which the team was appointed as main contractor and structural engineer.

As the only Danish project recognised in this year’s awards, The Wave is a landmark multiple-occupancy housing development incorporating 140 apartments distributed throughout nine levels and a ground-floor cafe.

Its distinctive, highly recognisable exterior is encased in durable porcelain tiles consisting of a rippling pattern of arcs, formulating a coherent connection between the waterline and cityscape.

Achievement
Grontmij’s success across the business at these awards is testament to the teams’ hard work and demonstrates the company’s high quality service in a range of expertise areas.

Congratulations to all the teams involved in these community-focused projects and to all of the partners involved in each scheme.
