19 Aug 2009 | Grontmij celebrates with a host of awards

Recent months have seen Grontmij receive a variety of awards for project-related, health and safety and community engagement achievements.

RoSPA / Severn Trent Water Occupational Health and Safety Awards - Best Supply Contractor Award

The awards form part of Severn Trent Water’s drive to ensure that all its suppliers achieve at least RoSPA’s Gold health and safety standard within 3 years; a level already attained by Grontmij back in 2005. On this occasion, Grontmij took the top honour in the face of strong competition from Severn Trent Water’s many suppliers for our ongoing demonstration of unrivalled health and safety best practice.

RoSPA and Severn Trent Water evaluated suppliers in relation to their safety track record and their efforts to inform and engage employees in order to promote a positive safety culture within their organisations.

2009 Severn Trent Community awards – ‘Corporate Responsibility Award in the Community’ for Albrighton scheme

Over 70 properties were flooded in the village of Albrighton, Shropshire in 2007 and Grontmij’s involvement began with a hydraulic study which identified the root causes. In response to these findings, Grontmij designed a £8 million drainage scheme including a 1.8m diameter storage tunnel. The contract for construction was awarded to Barhale.

Despite the inevitable disruption of the scheme, excellent relations have been maintained throughout with the Albrighton project commended by Severn Trent for its ‘extensive community consultation’ which included community presentations and a drop in centre allowing people to learn about the scheme and raise any concerns. These efforts allowed for the forging of excellent community relations and successful delivery.

Morgan Est Supply Chain Awards – Health and Safety award

A new manhole cover design, which was put forward by operations manager, Andy Wilson, has subsequently gone on to receive a prestigious award in the ‘Health and Safety’ category at last week’s Morgan Est’s Supply Chain Awards. The ceremony, which was held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, was attended by over 350 people and attracted over 50 award submissions across four categories.

Following the presentation of the award, Morgan Est announced that Severn Trent Water is considering using the design in future major capital works.

Scottish Capital Programme Awards 2009 – Project teams and Blue ribbon award

Members of Grontmij were integral to project teams selected for the following award nominations:

  • Health and Safety
  • Partnering
  • Team of the Year

The Scottish Water team of the year, which is the blue ribbon award, was given to the ‘Water Framework Directive Monitoring Team’ within which Grontmij played a key role. This follows success at last year’s event when employees from Grontmij were honoured with the ‘Reservoir Security Programme’ team of the year. To achieve this award two years running is a tremendous accomplishment.

Grontmij employees were also runners up for the Park Avenue flood alleviation project in the ‘Partnering Award’ category. The project received special commendation from Richard Ackroyd, Scottish Water’s Chief Executive Officer, on the engineering excellence and customer care displayed.

Street Design Awards – Highway award  for Ashford’s Shared Space project

The Ashford shared space project has been honoured with a further award after winning in the ‘Highway’ category of the Street Design Awards.

Within the same week, the scheme was also highly commended in the IHT awards, which recognises improvements in the street environment for those who live and work in the UK.

To date, the initiative has also picked up the ‘Innovation’ award at the ICE’s Kent and East Sussex branch awards as well as Sustain Magazine’s ‘Public Realm’ award.  It is also nominated for this year’s British Construction Industry Award and for the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building award.

The number and variety of awards won in recent months is testament to Grontmij’s continuous commitment to delivering high quality projects both technically, and also with regards to the relationships forged with partners and the community.
