Grontmij to help UKAEA decommision Lithuanian nuclear site
Grontmij is exporting its skills to Lithuania as part of a decommissioning project with client UKAEA, at the country’s main nuclear power plant.
UKAEA has just signed a multi million pound contract with the State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) in Lithuania. The contract will involve the provision of engineering designs and supporting safety/environmental documents necessary for obtaining regulatory approvals in the Turbine Hall of reactor Unit One, which has been closed since December 2004.
A major achievement
This is a flagship project at the world’s largest RBMK reactor, and represents a major achievement for UKAEA on the international stage. It will be leading a multi-partner consortium of international and local organisations including Grontmij, Ernst & Young Baltic and SWECO BKG LSPI, with UKAEA’s Engineering Services Group leading the design work, and overall project management being undertaken by Roy Manning.
‘Delighted to be extending our relationship’
Stephen Bailey, Grontmij’s operations director, said: “We’ve worked with UKAEA in this country since 2005 and are delighted to be extending our relationship into Eastern Europe and helping to decommission this sizable turbine hall in Lithuania.
“Decommissioning projects require a breadth of services and careful coordination. Our extensive experience in this field, combined with our multi-disciplinary resource base means we can draw on a deep pool of skills, as required at each stage of the project.”
