5 Aug 2009 | Grontmij honoured for addressing construction industry safety issue

All designers in the construction industry have a duty to mitigate hazards wherever reasonably practicable.

One such hazard that has been identified is the risk of operatives falling through manhole openings during construction. In response, Grontmij instigated a design initiative to create a concept that addresses this potential issue.

In order to achieve a solution that took into account the opinions and concerns of contractors, engineers and water companies, Grontmij engaged with strategic partner Morgan Est, supplier FP McCann and client Severn Trent Water. The result was a collaborative meeting of supply chain representatives to discuss, adapt and develop a new design that could be adopted to benefit all parties.

Minimising risk

The chosen design incorporates a grid seated on corner bearings within the opening to prevent anyone falling down the manhole, but that can also be removed if access is required. In addition to providing an effective solution, the simplicity of the design lends itself to being mass-produced. Prototypes of the design have been manufactured and FP McCann is now incorporating the revised opening detail as a standard option for their pre-cast concrete manhole slabs, hoping to have the product available in all sizes by the end of the year.

The benefits of the manhole cover design have been recognised after it received a prestigious award in the ‘Health and Safety’ category at Morgan Est’s Supply Chain Awards in June. The ceremony, which was held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, was attended by over 350 people and attracted over 50 award submissions across four categories. Following the presentation of the award, Morgan Est announced that Severn Trent Water is considering using the design in future major capital works.

Innovative approach to health and safety

Simon Beatham, Morgan Est supply chain director said, “The winners demonstrate the strength of our supply chain and these relationships are critical to us as we move forward as a company.”

Mike Taylor, senior operations manager with Grontmij comments, “The high standard of the entries that we received through the design initiative is testament to the innovation and expertise within the company. It also demonstrates Grontmij’s proactive commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its people, its partners and the industry that we work in.”

Director for health and safety, Andy Carpenter, added, “Organisations who wish to take a leading role in health and safety need to continually seek to improve and embrace innovation. Grontmij is one of those companies, and starting with an in-house design initiative followed by engagement with like-minded delivery partners, this has culminated in a new concept in manhole protection. This will in turn lead to a safer working environment for all those involved throughout its life cycle of construction, inspection and maintenance.”
