A92 Montrose Bridge
Increased longevity
Grontmij initially worked with Angus Council in 1994, carrying out a detailed inspection and assessment of the existing structure. It was found that the structure was suffering from alkali silica reaction. Grontmij designed a system to confine the concrete in critical zones by either stitch drilling or strapping using steel bands to contain the movement.
Replacement bridge
In 2002, as a result of continuing deterioration, it was necessary to replace the structure. Grontmij designed the new 146m long bridge as a three span steel composite structure constructed on new piled piers. The approach structures to the existing bridge were repaired, strengthened and re-used within the replacement bridge.
Saltaire commendation
The scheme received a Saltire commendation in recognition of the integrated approach, excellent design solution, innovative choice of construction materials and the efforts made to minimise disruption to the local community and the environment.
