Arecleoch Wind Farm

Arecleoch Wind Farm

Designing improved access to a remote site

The 60-turbine Arecleoch wind farm in South Ayrshire is set to be the fourth largest in Scotland.  Grontmij is the contractor’s designer responsible for designing improved access to the remote site. This covers a distance of 15km from the A714 at Arnimean Bridge and Bents Farm, including a new 35m single span bridge over the Girvan to Stranraer railway line; it also includes a further 45km of internal access roads within the wind farm site itself.

Provision of access, drainage and construction services

The work is unusual in that the access requirements during construction are more onerous than those for operation and maintenance of the wind farm. In addition to these transportation related activities, Grontmij is designing the main control building plus associated drainage and foundations for the turbine masts. The project is due for completion in 2010.
