Grontmij was contractor’s designer for this scheme, which was the first in Ireland to use Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) procurement. It comprises 41km of dual carriageway with four grade separated interchanges and 65 principal structures.

Short public hearing

An integrated approach to design development was used, appropriately reflecting environmental constraints and stakeholder needs, before the Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPO) and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) were prepared and published. This approach ensured successful passage of the scheme through the statutory process – the oral hearing was only five days in duration. 

Completion ten months ahead of schedule

Grontmij then undertook the detailed design of the scheme, working closely with the contractor and the National Roads Authority to ensure that the developing design reflected the target programme and budget at all times. The project was completed in July 2008, ten months early.
