National Traffic Control Centre

National Traffic Control Centre

Flagship ITS project

The National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC) is the Highways Agency’s flagship ITS project. NTCC is the Highways Agency’s primary centre for collecting data from the roadside, assessing the impact of events and notifying drivers via variable message signs, traffic radio broadcasts, the Highways Agency’s web site and a telephone service.

Technical advisor

Grontmij has been the Highways Agency’s technical advisor / employer’s agent on the project since 1997. The consultancy’s role included overseeing all the work undertaken by the NTCC operator to provide, maintain and operate a national strategic traffic management and control centre for the entire English motorway and trunk road network. This work involved the installation of a significant roadside infrastructure including some 600 automatic number plate recognition camera sites and 2015 loop monitoring sites.
