East Lothian Council commissioned Grontmij to assist them with assessing the condition of their roads and related infrastructure.
The main part of the commission was to record the condition and the location of the infrastructure, such as traffic signs, utility covers, pedestrian crossings and vehicle accesses. It was determined that the infrastructure should be positioned within one metre or so, which is similar to the level of accuracy of the Ordnance Survey Master Mapping in the urban areas of East Lothian.
Grontmij used Trimble GeoXT along with the GeoBeacon and their FastMap Mobile software. This combination provided differential GPS capability in the handheld device which communicates with the belt mounted GeoBeacon receiver via Bluetooth to give sub-metre of accuracy. The software was customised by our staff to enable the required features and their condition to be recorded by selections from drop down menus on the Geo-XT.
