Grontmij was appointed to undertake Falling Weight Deflectometer testing of the airport pavements on Orkney and Shetland.

Pavement Technology Limited (PTL) was appointed by the Atkins Group to undertake testing of flexible airport pavements, for the Highlands and Islands Airports Authority. The testing consisted of trial pitting, pavement coring and Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), which Grontmij was appointed to undertake. The pavement was required to be tested at a force of 90KN and the information collected was to be used to develop a long-term maintenance strategy for airport classification.

Early project completion

The strategic partnership between PTL and Grontmij enabled the project to benefit from our excellent FWD capabilities. The project was completed early and within budget to the satisfaction of the both PTL and the Atkins Group.
