Grontmij worked in partnership with Billund International Airport and the contractor to design a high performance surface course that was used to overlay the runway and extend its service life for a further ten years.

The planning and preparation took one year to complete, but the actual overlay of the 45m wide and 3100m long runway was completed in four nights without interruptions to the airport’s daytime operations.

The asphalt was laid using nine pavers in echelon across the runway width, with the material being supplied from four coating plants by over eighty articulated lorries. The project drew upon Grontmij’s extensive expertise gained from working in over 130 airports worldwide.
