Pavement Rehabilitation

Grontmij has vast experience with pavement assessment techniques including:

  • Visual Condition Surveys – through walkovers or video assessment;

  • Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) – Testing, Analysis & Reporting (Grontmij produces FWDs that are used on asphaltic and concrete roads and airfield runways are accredited through Dutch CROW and UK TRL correlation trials);
  • Light Weight Deflectometer LWD – Testing, Analysis & Reporting (Grontmij developed the Prima100 LWD, the most widely used LWD in the UK & Europe);
  • Management of invasive testing, principally cores, using approved sub-contractors;
  • Specifying laboratory testing of recovered samples;
  • Using Ground Penetrating Radar to assess the pavement condition from approved sub-contractors.

Assessment / Reporting

Using these testing and assessment, methods Grontmij is able to determine the residual life of existing pavements and design targeted remedial measures to reuse the existing pavement with the most cost effective repairs.

Analytical Overlay Designs

Grontmij's extensive experience with testing and assessment of existing pavements followed by detailed analytical asphalt overlay design calculations has led to the production of economic designs which allow for the most efficient use of the existing pavement asset.

There are numerous significant benefits in retaining and repairing existing pavement assets such as cost efficiencies, sustainability, which help to reduce the carbon footprint and the construction programme. Grontmij has utilised this approach on trunk and local road schemes including the M80 Stepps to Haggs, the M50 Upgrade Scheme Contract 1, A1 Dishforth to Leeming, A90 and M9 Spur and A78 Ardrossan Bypass.
