Albrighton Flood Alleviation Scheme

Albrighton Flood Alleviation Scheme

Award-winning initiative

The village of Albrighton, near Wolverhampton, has experienced substantial flooding in recent years due to lack of capacity in the existing sewerage system, coupled with the volume of surface water flowing into a local brook.

Grontmij was appointed to carry out a site survey to determine the reasons for flooding and make recommendations for alleviating the problem. In response to the findings, Grontmij designed an online storage tunnel pipeline, which was then built by Barhale.

Reducing flooding risk

The system, which has won first prize at the UK Society of Trenchless Techniques awards, is unique as it is installed on a curve. The design will benefit residents, improving the capacity of the pipe and controlling water flow more effectively, reducing the risk of flooding.
