Matlock Sewage Treatment Works
Matlock Sewage Treatment Works
Upgrade to meet population demands
In order that Matlock sewage treatment works, which is located within a World Heritage Site, can meet future demands placed on it by a growing population and increasingly stringent discharge consents, Severn Trent Water propose to upgrade the processes at the works.
The proposed upgrade included the construction of a new access bridge across the River Derwent. The Environment Agency raised concerns that the proposed work may increase the water levels within the river during times of flood and that the proposls themselves may be at risk of flooding therefore creating potential for environmental harm.
Hydraulic model of River Derwent
Grontmij utilised their extensive experience to develop a hydraulic model of the River Derwent. The results from the model were used to ensure that the design of the proposed access bridge will not alter the flow regime within the River Derwent. They were also used to influence the plant process design ensuring that the plant can continue to operate during flood events without spilling untreated sewage to the environment.
