Oakley Farm - Nitrate Removal

Award winning project

The basis of the innovative and award winning Oakley Farm nitrate plant project was the installation of a new water treatment plant to remove nitrate from drinking water.

Innovative solution

In this particular plant there was a specific constraint from the Environment Agency that no waste could be discharged to nearby watercourse, therefore nitrate removed from the water had to be destroyed instead of being put back into the environment. It is the first plant in the world to be designed with this capability. The plant at Oakley Farm is also the first ion exchange plant which is sophisticated enough to separate out the various salts removed from the water (sulphates, bicarbonates, chlorides and nitrates) and treat them differently.

The project team received the owners design innovation award for Oakley Farm and the remainder of the nitrate removal schemes in the programme have continued to be installed and commissioned successfully.
