Providing water for Birmingham
Frankley water treatment works is a major works serving a large portion of the Birmingham area. Whitacre is smaller and serves the Coleshill and Sutton Coldfield areas.
The capital programme addresses the replacement of the existing distributed control system installations on these sites. The scope of the works is to provide a new major works control system asset. This includes replacement of the top end SCADA systems and the identification and rectification of key operability issues, as well as temporary works/plant to facilitate migration of automated plant/processes.
Finding innovative solutions
The change-out process carries significant risk, as the projects involve the live change-out of the existing controls, with no plant shutdown. At Frankley, this was particularly difficult due to the need to coordinate and schedule activities with the nine other (civil) major improvement schemes running concurrently.
